Independent Reading (10 mins) TEWWG Journal Prompt #5 (Edmodo) There were multiple references to the title of the novel: In Chapter 18, “Six eyes were questioning God” (Hurston 159), “They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God” (Hurston 160), and in Chapter 19, “Death had found them watching, trying to see beyond seeing”(Hurston 170). *Page numbers are based upon my book. Based upon these references, what is the importance/meaning of the title of the novel? What is Hurston revealing to the reader?

In Chapter 16 Hurston introduces the character, Mrs. Turner. Mrs. Turner clearly suffers from colorism. How does Mrs. Turner’s colorism impact the story? Why does Hurston include this character/story in the novel?
