Students were reminded of the Research Paper Idea Sheet due today so Mr. Broome can offer feedback Students received the Sun is also a Star Socratic Seminar Prep document in preparation for the Group Discussion to be completed on Monday, 10/19/20 Students then were allowed to work asynchronously on their Capstone or on the Socratic Seminar document American Literature Announcement: The current "Intro to American Literature" digital session on CTLS will be closed this coming Monday (10/19/20) and we will be using a new session entitle "Transcendentalism". This means that assignments from the past session will no longer be accepted after this coming Monday. Warm-up: Free-write Friday Students were told of their new assignment due TODAY: "Definition Essay Thesis Statement" After Mr. Broome shared a powerpoint on Introductory Paragraphs, students were allowed to work on their own on the paper or Transcendentalism webquest. Mr. Broome asked students to review where they were in the Capstone research and Mentor process. Discussed and modeled finding research on Cobb Digital Library Mr. Broome informed students that there is an upcoming Socratic Seminar based on "The Sun is also a star". Students should download and review the following:The class was allowed to work asynchronously on either their research or contacting Mentors. American Literature Mr. Broome reviewed CEI paragraph Lead-ins and In-text Citations in preparation for the paper due Monday 10/19/20 Warm-up: "First thoughts" - students wrote down and expressed their first thoughts when viewing a picture of a tree. Students then answered the question: "What does it mean to be Romantic?" and Mr. Broome explained the Romantic literary ideals and how some students expressed romantic ideals in their responses to the tree. Students were introduced to the new Unit: Transcendentalism and were assigned a Webquest Activity due Monday 10/19/20 at the start of class American Literature
Reviewed the Definition Essay Assignment (due Monday, 10/19/20)
Students were assigned an Assignment in CTLS ("Check Your Understanding, Activity 1.11, pg. 83 in the Springboard textbook) that is DUE TODAY Students then took their American Dream Unit Test Multicultural Literature Mr. Broome introduced the Sr. Capstone Research Idea Sheet template as a helpful organizer for students to collect and process their knowledge about their research topic. Students were allowed to work asynchronously on their research and/or finding a mentor while Mr. Broome kept some individuals behind to discuss their Research Questions and/or to submit their Questions since some were absent yesterday. Those who needed extra help were told to meet the teacher during tomorrow's non-instructional block. American Literature

Today was an 80/20 day where students spent approx. 80% of their time working asynchronously:
American Literature Warm-up: "First Thoughts" - students were asked to think for 10 seconds and jotting down what came to mind after they heard the word: America. The class then discussed what students wrote. Continued with Springboard Activity 1.10 (Whitman's America) and reviewed yesterday's homework questions Students were split into 3 groups and made to answer the three Check Your Understanding questions using Padlet online. The class then moved onto Activity 1.11 (America's Voices) and read/discussed Langston Hughes' "I, Too" poem HW: Students are to answer questions 1-3 (page 80 on the hard copy textbook) which deal with "I, Too". Warm-up: What is one question relating to your Senior Capstone Career you want to answer? Mr. Broome reviewed some issues with grades and some students not submitting work, including Senior Capstone proposals that still have not been submitted. Students were assigned the rest of class to continue reading the novel HW: There will be a warm-up check this coming Thursday, Oct. 8. Students were made aware that they will have a quiz tomorrow over the novel The Sun is also a Star Mr. Broome spoke to the remaining students who attended class regarding their Senior Capstone Proposals Students continued reading the novel The Sun is also a Star American Literature Warm-up: Think about it Thursday--Think about those less fortunate than you (define "less fortunate" for yourself). If money was no option for you, what's the #1 thing you'd like to do for these people? Mr. Broome apologized to the class and shared The Glass Castle Reading calendar, having thought he'd provided it previously. Students were provided with the following Discussion Questions:Students were split into three (3) groups of 8-9 students and conducted Group Discussions of the novel, using assigned questions and/or bringing their own to the class. The class read The Sun is also a Star prologue and students discussed the connection between apple pie and the universe. Mr. Broome shared the YouTube video "Best Speech About Humanity - Carl Sagan" and asked students to share their thoughts/impressions/meanings after watching the video. Students continued reading The Sun is also a Star and Mr. Broome shared the Double Entry Journal students should use as they read the novel looking at:
American Literature Warm-up: students read and answered the following: “Abuelito under a bald light bulb, under a ceiling dusty with flies, puffs his cigar and counts money soft and wrinkled as old Kleenex” –Sandra Cisneros 1. How can a ceiling be dusty with flies? Are the flies plentiful or sparse? Active or still? Clustered or evenly distributed? 2. What does Cisneros mean by a bald light bulb? What does this reveal about Abuelito’s room? 3. Take Cisneros’s phrase, under a ceiling dusty with flies, and write a new phrase by substituting the word dusty with a different adjective. Students then signed up for Discussion Groups which will take place on Thursday (students will have to answer/discuss previously shared reading questions from the novel The Glass Castle. Students worked asynchronously on either catching up or continuing on with their reading and students received the Glass Castle p. 81-101 Discussion Questions HW: Students who missed yesterday's novel quiz will be allowed to log into Zoom at 10am tomorrow (9/23/20) to access that quiz. |
